Materials
- A small world globe identical in size to the Sandpaper Globe.
- The continents are painted in various colors and the oceans are all painted blue.
- The Sandpaper Globe

Presentation

Introduction

Invite the child to come and work with you. Bring him over to the globes and point to the painted globe. Give the child the name of the material. Tell the child that we will be bringing over the painted globe and the sandpaper globe. Have the child carry the painted globe to the table and have him place it in the center of the table. Then have him bring over the sandpaper globe and place it to the right of the painted globe. Then have the child sit to your left.

Procedure
- Review the language for the sandpaper globe.
- Compare the two globes with the child.
- Move the sandpaper globe off to the right of the table and concentrate on the painted globe.
- Isolate one of the continents using both hands.
- Tell the child, “A large area of land is called a “CONTENENT”.
- Isolate a part of the water and tell the child, “A large area of water is called an“OCEAN”.
- Trace one of the continents (the one you had been isolating).
- Ask the child, “Can you find another continent?”
- Do a Three-Period lesson for “continent” and “ocean”.
